Recreation in Chambers County, Alabama

The City of Valley’s 54,000 square-foot community center has many features, including an indoor pool, two racquetball courts, two gyms that can be opened into a large meeting room to serve as a community center, a fitness center, game room, catering/kitchen, and indoor walking track.

In 2015, Point University was gifted the Riverside Country Club, a golf, tennis, dining and events center located in Lanett. As home to the Point Skyhawks golf team, the course provides a top-notch practice facility and a challenging course for competitive match play. The 18-hole course is primarily used to accommodate the public’s need for recreational golf. The club’s events center is an excellent site for business meetings and training sessions, social clubs, church group outings and wedding receptions.

The Chambers County Lake is a 183-acre public fishing lake made possible by the combined efforts and cooperation of the people of Chambers County and the Alabama Department of Conservation. It is located five miles southeast of LaFayette on Chambers County Road 83. Amenities at the lake include a boat ramp, fishing pier, restrooms, concessions (bait, tackle and snacks), and a primitive camping site.

The Chambers County Lake is currently closed for maintenance and ecological upkeep.

The Chattahoochee River forms the southeastern border of Alabama and Georgia, and is divided by a series of dams, including West Point Dam. It offers exceptional fishing, paddling and hiking. Valley partnered with The Trust for Public Land to create a paddling trail along a beautiful, 52-mile stretch of the river. The Blueway Water Trail includes launch points, portages, and camp spots for canoeists, paddle boarders, and kayakers.

Penton Raceway is a 3/8-mile clay oval that hosts weekly dirt track racing throughout the spring and summer. Located just north of LaFayette, the track is locally owned and hosts several racing divisions including, Bandits, Hobby, Limited Sportsman, and Crate Late Models. Special events include NeSmith Super Late Model Series, Sprint Cars and the Alabama Crate Mini Series.

West Point Lake extends 35 miles along the Chattahoochee River on the Alabama-Georgia state line. The lake’s 500 miles of shoreline provides excellent opportunities for fishing, camping, boating and other recreational activities.

Lake Harding, also known as Bartlett’s Ferry Lake, is a 5,850-acre reservoir on the Chattahoochee River. Bartlett’s Ferry Dam forms the lake, which is located in mostly Harris County, GA and portions entering Alabama. Lake Harding is a deep lake with a depth of over 100 feet (30 m) at the dam itself.

The City of Lanett offers recreation activities for all ages. The  LB Sykes Community Center includes a fitness room with new equipment and free weights, a game room, an outdoor pool, an event center, an athletic hall gymnasium, and James Hardy Gymnasium. Citizens can participate in youth and adult athletics such as basketball, soccer, baseball, and softball leagues. The Senior Center is used for various fitness activities including shuffle board, table tennis, and Masters Games. It is the mission of the Lanett Parks and Recreation department to create recreational opportunities for growth and enhancement by developing diverse services and programs that promote citizen involvement and a strong sense of community while striving to increase the social, cultural and physical well-being of its residents and visitors.
